Preheat oven 350°F [180°C].
Combine brown sugar and hot water, heat in microwave until a syrup.
Mix flour, baking powder, salt, shortening, add milk until forms a ball, best mixed with your hands. Roll into rectangular shape. Sprinkle pastry with a bit of brown sugar and cinnamon. Spread apples on top. Roll up and slice one inch [2-1/2 cm] thick. Put cut side down in 8x8 [20x20 cm] baking dish. Dot with butter and pour syrup over.
Bake for 30 minutes or until brown on top. Serve with whipped cream.
Note This recipe can be easily doubled.
